Wales Scores Lotto Hat Trick
14 Mar 2006
Keep a welcome in the valleys for Wales’ third new millionaire since March
A retired Cwmbran factory worker has proved that good luck comes in threes when it comes to Welsh lottery winners – after winning £2,470,196 in last Wednesday’s Lotto draw (19 April 2006).
It was definitely third time lucky for Gareth Cooper (54), the third new National Lottery millionaire created in Wales in just two months. Gareth’s big win follows hot on the heels of Llanelli great-granddad Bob Bradley’s £3.5 million 83rd birthday Lotto jackpot bonus on 11 March – and Swansea ex-teacher Mike Straddon’s £1.3 million lottery success on 1 March.
Gareth is married to Jenny (49) – a deputy head – and has a daughter, Hannah (17). Now the good news is starting to sink in, the three of them are busy preparing their dream shopping list – with a luxury trip to Barbados coming top for Hannah.
Gareth said: “The first thing I will buy is a new car, and then we are going to look for a new house and book a holiday. I’ve always wanted a Toyota 4 x4 Truckman, so that is top of my list. Then we will look at buying a new house in the Llangybi area – it will have to have some land as I’ve always wanted my own smallholding. I’ve got five dogs, which has kept me going since retirement, so it will be great to have more room for them.” Jenny added: “Hannah and I definitely plan to hit the shops for a girly shopping spree as soon as possible!”
Gareth said that he been feeling lucky all week in the lead up to the draw, based on the results of his horoscope. He did not realise he had won the jackpot until last Saturday though – three days after becoming a millionaire.
He explained: “I’d bought the ticket on Tuesday, but didn’t check the numbers until the following Saturday morning. My wife Jenny was upstairs trying to persuade the gas board to lower our gas bills, whilst I was trying to tell her we had won the lottery. It took me a while to convince her and Hannah that I wasn’t joking.”
Gareth has played Lotto since it first started. He bought his winning ticket from R and R Retail in Llanyravon Square. The winning Lotto numbers on 19 April were 3, 9, 33, 44, 47 and 49.
This Wednesday (26 April), there is an estimated Lotto Rollover jackpot of £8 million as well as an estimated £4.7 million Lotto Extra jackpot available to win – while Friday’s (28 April) EuroMillions Rollover jackpot is an estimated £17 million.
